This article explains installation of the :Email Outlook Add-in for message protection.
Prerequisites
To use SSProtect, you must first provision an Account. You can download and install the software, then manually create an Account as described in the article, Creating an Account. This creates an evaluation using fully-functional software, which can optionally include :Email.
If you are instead participating as a member of an Organization, you will receive a Registration Email you can use with the procedure described in, Using the Registration Email.
Integrated Installation
In both cases, when :Email is enabled for your Account, you will have the option to install it after you Login to the :Foundation Client. This configures a Microsoft Outlook Add-In that uses :Expand to protect email message content. It is installed with an installer package that is acquired and executed in response to your acknowledgment.
:Email installation is as a result seamless and straightforward, unless you do not have a suitable .NET framework installed. Though rare, if it is an issue, the installer will guide you through proper installation and configuration of the required .NET v4.5.1 components first.
NOTE: .NET is required due to the nature of Outlook Add-Ins. The :Email Add-In does not carry out secure or protective operations, it is a proxy for transferring information and command requests to/ from the primary SSProtect component responsible for core host execution.
Uninstall
SSProtect automatically removes :Email when it is removed, though you can independently remove :Email by choosing SSProtect :Email instead of Simple Security: Protect using either the Control Panel (Windows 7/ 10) or Apps & Features Settings in Windows 10.
Troubleshooting
:Email must be installed and registered in order for Outlook to load it on startup. In some cases you may want to temporarily disable :Email without removing it, for example to troubleshoot compatibility concerns, or you may wish to initiate a Maintenance install. Use the following sections for details on how to work directly with installed components.
To Install, Update, or Repair :Email from the :Foundation Client
In the :Foundation Client, you can request an :Email Version check and subsequent Install, Update, or Maintenance operation, as follows:
- Right-click the SSProtect icon in the notification tray
- Choose the License and Components menu item
- Double-check that you see :Email Enabled. If not, refer to SSProtect Licensing for details
- Click Install :Email; this will initiate a Version Check
- If you have the latest :Email version, you will be prompted for Maintenance Repair: Choose Yes.
- If you do not have the latest version of :Email, you will be prompted to Install or Update; proceed according to the prompts
To Enable/Disable :Email in Outlook
When :Email is installed and registered, you can enable and disable it within Outlook:
- From the Outlook File menu, choose Options
- On the left-hand side of the Options dialog, choose the Add-Ins panel
- Find SSProtect :Email in the list of Add-Ins - if installed and registered, it will show up in one of the Active, Inactive, or Disabled sections.
- In the Manage dropdown, choose Disabled Items if SSProtect :Email is listed as Disabled, else COM Add-Ins: Click Go.
- Scroll to SSProtect :Email, check/uncheck its' checkbox: Click OK (several times) then restart to apply changes.
Adding/Removing in Outlook
In the previous Enable/Disable procedure, in Step 5 rather than using the checkbox you can choose Add/Remove. This immediately loads or unloads the component and does not require you to restart Outlook. However, the associated file you need is installed in a cryptic set of subfolders that make it very hard to find. The previous procedure is more often suitable.
Taking Care when Restarting Outlook
When restarting Outlook, make sure to Exit rather than close - in some cases (with older versions) you may think you're restarting Outlook, but the software continues running. If you make adjustments and restart only to find results differ from what you expected, revisit the way you're restarting Outlook to make absolutely certain you are shutting it down completely.
